Get ready for another year of foreign affairs and more intimate affairs on Netflix's "The Diplomat." On Thursday, the streaming service announced that the series, which just dropped all eight episodes of Season 4 on Oct. 15, is coming back for a fifth season.
Netflix announced the news on Instagram with a photo of the show's star, Keri Russell, holding a sign that reads "Renewed for season 5." The final episode of Season 4 ended with a cliffhanger moment set at the G7 summit where Allison Janney's character, U.S. President Grace Penn, made a surprising declaration. In addition to Russell and Janney, the series also features Rufus Sewell, Bradley Whitford, Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah.
Long Island has also played a role in "The Diplomat." From January through March 2025, the cast and crew of "The Diplomat" came to Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay to film the Season 3 finale. Much of the filming took place in the Main House (formerly Coe Hall) of the estate as well in the gardens and greenhouse. Planting Fields hosted a tour earlier this year in which guests got to visit locations where the episode was shot.
"The Diplomat" premiered in 2023 and was created by Debora Cahn, who was also a writer for "The West Wing" — which also featured Janney and Whitford — and "Homeland." In addition to critical acclaim, the series has amassed numerous Emmy nominations for its cast as well as two nominations for best drama series.
