Nunzio’s Pizza Town, the family-owned pizzeria in West Babylon that has been in business for more than 50 years, is closing. Owner Nunzio Minissale told Newsday he is retiring and that Saturday is the restaurant's last day.

The restaurant started in 1967 when Nunzio and his wife, Antonina "Nina," arrived from Italy, according to the restaurant's website. The family has been creating pies, calzones and Italian American classics for decades, from fried calamari and baked clams to eggplant rollatini, stuffed shells and homemade lasagna. Pizza here is topped with everything from mushrooms to pepperoni, and heroes include chicken Parm, sausage and peppers, and potato and egg. Rounding out the menu are fresh zeppoles.

The stand-alone building, on a busy stretch of Route 109, hosted community events like psychic nights and sing-a-longs, and participated in charitable events like Long Island Pizza Strong. The closing was first announced in a Facebook post on Monday.

"After over 50 wonderful years serving this community, we're officially closing our doors. We want to thank all of our loyal customers, friends, and neighbors who supported our family and made the pizzeria a special part of your lives," the post read.

Since then, Nunzio said "the outpouring of love and support from the community has been overwhelmingly beautiful." He along with Nina and their son, Anthony, will take "all these memories with us into that retirement."
