A Bay Shore High School employee has been placed on administrative leave as police investigate unspecified "allegations" involving the person, schools Superintendent Steven J. Maloney wrote in a letter to members of the school community this week.

In an emailed statement to Newsday, Suffolk County police confirmed they are "investigating a report involving an employee of the Bay Shore School District. Additional information will not be released during the ongoing investigation."

The nature of the allegations was unclear Friday.

In his letter, dated Wednesday, Maloney wrote, in part: "The Bay Shore School District has been made aware of allegations involving a High School staff member. When made aware, the District took immediate action, placing the staff member on administrative leave and barring the individual from District property. The Suffolk County Police Department was immediately notified and we continue to fully cooperate with their ongoing investigation. As this is a legal and personnel matter, the District is not able to provide further information at this time."

Maloney did not identify the staff member.
