Long Island forecast: Wintry mix will make for messy Tuesday commute

A wintry mix of snow, rain and sleet figures to make for a messy morning commute Tuesday, with light snow beginning about 4 a.m. and then turning to a mix of rain and snow, the National Weather Service said.
Early morning temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s could create icy conditions, as well, though the weather service said daytime temperatures will be in low 40s — meaning conditions will mostly be an annoyance.
Accumulations will be less than a half-inch of snow, according to the forecast, with rain turning any accumulations to slush.
The weather service said winds will build throughout the day, with light winds in the morning turning into gusts as high as 21 mph by the evening. Temperatures overnight into Wednesday will dip to about 34 degrees with gusts as high as 23 mph, according to the weather service.
There’s a lot of sunshine in the forecast for Wednesday, Christmas Eve, though overcast skies and are in the Christmas Day forecast.

Thursday night will be mostly cloudy with a low about 27.
The weather service is calling for the likelihood of snow after 1 p.m. Friday with a high near 37 and an evening low of 28. There's a 40% chance of snow Saturday, mixing with rain in the evening when the low is forecast to drop to 30, the weather service said.
On Sunday, expect a chance of rain or snow and mostly cloudy skies and a high near 46. There's another chance of rain or snow Sunday evening with a low about 25 before sunny skies return Monday when the high will hit 34.
