Coated in yellow stucco, a three-level house on Cove Road with flower-filled window boxes is a local landmark referenced by area residents giving directions, said listing agent Mandy Laderer.

At the turn of spring in Oyster Bay Cove, neighbors wait to see which color scheme the homeowner has chosen for her second-story flower boxes, said Laderer, who lives in the area.

"I said, 'Wow, you know, I hope whoever buys this will do the same thing,' " said Laderer, of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. "Because it really is a curiosity seeker's dream."

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom house with a terracotta roof is on the market for $1.388 million. Taxes on the ¼-acre property, which falls within the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District, total $21,266.

Built in 1878, according to Nassau County land records, the house has oil heating and central air conditioning.

"To me, it feels like a castle," Laderer said. "You go up, and you have these grand archways."

A three-car garage on the first level is flanked by two exterior staircases that lead to the second floor. Among the home's features are a wood-burning fireplace, an eat-in kitchen that leads to a brick patio and one bedroom with its own entrance. The current owners have used the entire third floor as a primary suite, Laderer said.

"You have to love it or hate it, because it's one of those houses where you've got a lot of stairs to go up," Laderer said. "But, it's just fascinating, when you get up to each level, you see the water."

Across the street, there is a private beach for Oyster Bay Cove residents with optional boat mooring and kayak access for additional fees, Laderer said. The view of the water is best in the wintertime, she added.

Flood insurance is not required for the property, according to Laderer.

"It's the best of having a life on the water, but not paying the $3 to $4 million price," she said.
