Woodmere: Proximity to NYC, beaches draw buyers

THE SCOOP Best known for its proximity to Manhattan and the beach, Woodmere is a hamlet with a rich history and no big box stores.
Commonly known as "The Five Towns" — Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence and Woodmere — the communities are separate, but for many are part of one distinct area.
"Is there a difference between Cedarhurst and Woodmere?" Jonathan Winter, of Pin It Realty, said. "Not really."
Farther to the south is Old Woodmere, he said, considered more a real estate term, where there is a bit of waterfront, and then Woodsburgh Village, where many large estates still stand or once existed.
William Fox, the owner of Fox Film Corporation, had a large estate in Woodmere called Fox Hall in the 1920s, with visitors like film legend Humphrey Bogart, Winter said. That mansion was torn down and houses were built on the land, he added.
Activist Harvey Milk grew up in Woodmere. His parents owned a department store on Broadway, Winter said.
Nassau County-owned North Woodmere Park is a main attraction for locals, said Winter, noting its Olympic-sized swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts and picnic areas.

Most of Woodmere's shops, restaurants and professional offices are on and around Broadway, noted David Friedman, president of the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association.
"In Woodmere, there's nothing like a Target or any kind of big box. It's mostly independent businesses," Friedman said.
The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library is a focal point in the community, Winter said. "It is architecturally beautiful and holds wonderful events," including movies, current events discussions and musical programs.
An ongoing disputed development on the 118-acre Woodmere Golf Club may be heading toward resolution, according to a recent Newsday story, with some land being preserved.
In Woodmere, houses are mostly Colonials, split-levels and ranches, along with some large waterfront estates. Condos and co-ops are also available.
