Uh-ho.
Max Fried, who missed two months earlier in the season with a left bone bruise, landed back on the injured list with the same ailment on Monday, the Yankees announced.
The injury is backdated to Friday, the day after Fried’s start Thursday afternoon against the Mariners when he allowed one run and five hits in a 1-0 loss to the Mariners.
Fried did not show any signs of discomfort during the outing, though he did characterize it afterward as “a little erratic.”
In related news – news from earlier in the day, it coming when it did not coincidental – from earlier in the day, word came that Carlos Rodon would be coming off the injured list earlier than intended and slated to start Tuesday night’s series opener against the Orioles in Baltimore.
Rodon, 4-2 with a 3.30 ERA in nine games this season, had been on the 15-day injured list since July 3 because of left elbow inflammation. Because of surgery last October to remove bone spurs from his left elbow, Rodon did not make his 2026 season debut until May 10.
Meanwhile, just how serious a setback Monday’s news is for Fried for the rest of the year cannot yet be said, though it’s generally not a positive prognosis for any professional athlete when he re-lands on the IL with the same, or similar, injury that put him there previously in the season.
Fried is 4-4 with a 2.81 ERA in 15 starts this season. He went 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA in 19 games before the injury and 0-1 but with a 1.82 ERA in five games after returning from the IL.
