Knicks sign five players to training camp contracts, including former No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman

The Knicks finalized a flurry of signings to once again create a competition for the final roster spot.
The team announced the signings of John Konchar, Bruce Brown, Ochai Agbaji, Drew Eubanks and James Wiseman to Exhibit 9 deals — non-guaranteed training camp contracts.
The Knicks currently have 13 guaranteed contracts. They technically have two roster spots open, as well as three two-way contracts available, but they can only sign one veteran minimum and remain below the second apron to start the season unless they make a trade. They could also dip to 13 players for a period of no more than 14 consecutive days or 28 total days in a season.
Ideally, the Knicks would add a third center behind Karl-Anthony Towns and newcomer Andre Drummond. Wiseman and Eubanks could fit that role along with Liam Robbins, who was signed to an Exhibit 10 deal after playing with the Knicks' summer league squad. They also signed Jaden Akins, Nick Jourdain, Mitch Mascari, Toby Okani and Paul Zilinskas to Exhibit 10 deals and then waived them, clearing a path for them to join the Westchester Knicks G League squad.
Wiseman was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, selected by Golden State. He was traded to Detroit after playing just one and a half seasons with Golden State and then signed a two-year deal with Indiana. He was dealt to Toronto, waived two days later and then returned to Indiana, but after appearing in 63 games in 2023-24 with Detroit, he has appeared in just five NBA games in the last two seasons.
The 29-year-old Eubanks has spent eight seasons in the league with six organizations. He played 42 games for Sacramento, including 11 starts, last season.
Brown has drawn interest from the Knicks before, and the hard-nosed 6-4 wing appeared in all 82 games for Denver last season. Konchar spent six full seasons in Memphis before being dealt at the trade deadline last season to Utah as part of the Jaren Jackson deal. Agbaji was a lottery pick by Cleveland in 2022 but, before he ever suited up, he was sent to Utah as part of the deal that brought Donovan Mitchell to the Cavs. He then spent time in Toronto and Brooklyn.
The Knicks will hold media day and begin training camp on Sept. 28.
