Jim Martin named Stony Brook head baseball coach
After eight seasons as associate head coach, Jim Martin has been promoted to head coach of the Stony Brook baseball team, the university announced Thursday.
Martin becomes just the second head coach in the program’s Division I history, succeeding legendary coach Matt Senk, who retired this spring after 35 seasons and 967 wins.
“It’s exciting, humbling, and really a dream come true to be named head coach at such a storied baseball program,” Martin told Newsday. “This is what I’ve been working toward for 20 years.”
Since joining the Seawolves in 2017, Martin has helped lead the team to three America East regular-season titles, a 2019 NCAA Tournament appearance, and a successful transition into the Colonial Athletic Association. In 2025, the team recorded its best offensive numbers since joining the CAA, including a home run jump from 26 to 69.
Martin has coached several standout players, including All-Americans Erik Paulsen and Evan Giordano, and mentored multiple MLB Draft picks. He’s also been a driving force behind the program’s recruiting, academics and player development.
“Having coach Senk’s trust to do my job really helped prepare me for this opportunity,” Martin said. “There will never be another Matt Senk, but I’m excited to bring my own personality to the program while continuing the legacy he built.”
Martin, a former St. John’s standout, brings nearly two decades of coaching experience. Senk praised his longtime assistant and close friend.
“The first thing that comes to mind is that he’s an elite coach who really knows the game,” he said. “But more importantly, he does a great job helping our players grow into better, more well-rounded people.”
