Tyrone Tracy Jr. returned as the Giants’ starting running back for one quarter against Kansas City on Sunday. But the shoulder injury he suffered will keep him out for a while.
Tracy is expected to miss two to four weeks with a dislocated shoulder, a league source confirmed to Newsday. The news was first reported Tuesday by ESPN.
It means more reps for rookie running back Cam Skattebo and veteran Devin Singletary.
Tracy, who didn’t start in Week 2 against Dallas and was placed on kick return duty, opened Sunday with five straight touches on four runs and one catch. He had seven carries for 29 yards and two catches for seven yards before being tackled out of bounds and being slow to get up with 1:42 left in the first quarter.
Tracy led the Giants in rushing last season with 839 yards, third most among rookies, and had 1,123 scrimmage yards.
Without him, Skattebo filled in admirably. He led the Giants in rushing for the second straight game with 60 yards on 10 carries and added six catches for 61 yards. He also scored his second touchdown of the season on a 13-yard run in the second quarter.
“Cam is a good young player to coach,” coach Brian Daboll said Monday. “He runs hard. He makes few mistakes relative to understanding the schematics of things. Instinctive player and made the most of his opportunity.”
Singletary has just eight carries through three games as Skattebo passed him on the depth chart. But with Tracy out, the duo will look to get going Sunday against the Chargers, who boast the NFL’s ninth-best run defense.
