Aaron Glenn and the Jets were booed multiple times and chants of “Let’s Go Dolphins” were heard inside MetLife Stadium late in the game.
The Jets were outplayed by a winless division rival that hadn’t led in a game once all season.
The Dolphins handed the Jets a troubling 28-25 loss on Sunday. The Jets dropped to 2-5 on the season and are 0-8 against AFC East teams since Glenn became coach last season.
The Jets needed a stop on Miami’s last possession to have a chance to tie or win the game. But Glenn’s defense gave up a 14-yard run on first down and a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Malik Willis on fourth-and-1 near midfield just after the 2-minute warning. The Jets were out of timeouts. Miami just ran out the clock.
Geno Smith threw for 287 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr. had his second-straight 100-yard receiving game. Cooper caught five passes for 115 yards and a touchdown.
Braelon Allen, starting his fourth straight game in place of the injured Breece Hall (quad), finished with 134 scrimmage yards. Tight end Mason Taylor caught two touchdown passes and a two-point conversion.
Garrett Wilson was a forgotten man for the second consecutive game. He had two catches for 26 yards
Willis was 14-for-21 for 208 yards, two touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. Running back Ollie Gordon II rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown. Caleb Douglas had two touchdown receptions, including a 63-yard score with 4:44 in the fourth quarter to make it a two-score game. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick whiffed at a chance to tackle Douglas at the Jets’ 47.
The Dolphins (1-5) came in averaging 14 points a game. They had that after their first two possessions and surpassed it by the end of the half. The Jets were down 21-7 at the half after Willis ran it in from 2 yards out with six seconds left in the second quarter.
After the Jets were booed loudly as they left the field at halftime, they had a scoring opportunity to open the third. But Jason Sanders’ 40-yard field attempt hit the right upright.
The Jets cut it to 21-14 on their next possession on Cooper’s 3-yard touchdown grab. Cooper also had a 60-yard reception on third-and-7.
The defense made a big stand on the following possession. Nate Lynn sacked Willis on third-and-2 at midfield, forcing Miami to punt. The Jets squandered a chance to tie it on their next series.
They drove to the 1-yard line but went backwards on their next three plays. Andrew Beck was tackled for a 1-yard loss on first down, Allen for a 2-yard loss on second and Smith was sacked on third-and-goal from the 4. Sanders converted a 33-yard field goal to make it 21-17 with 8:57 left in the game.
It stayed that way until Douglas scored on a 63-yard catch-and-run touchdown.
The Jets answered with a quick score. Smith threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Taylor. After the two teams exchanged penalties on the Jets’ first two two-point conversion tries, Smith scrambled and hit Taylor to make it 28-25 with 3:24 left.
