Scoreless at halftime, Cold Spring Harbor’s field hockey team came alive in the second half, netting two goals for a 2-0 win Tuesday over Locust Valley in Conference I.
It was sophomore Serafina Belcastro who was able to get the Seahawks on the board in the third quarter, during their fourth corner attempt of the game.
“After three other corner attempts, our goal we made during halftime was finally to finish on one of them,” assistant coach Carolena Purpura said. “Serafina had a direct shot to the right corner, and it was just a great feeling to see what we had discussed during halftime come to life on the field.”
Senior Keira Chan scored with 20 seconds left for Cold Spring Harbor, assisted by Finley Woodworth.
“Since Locust Valley’s defense was so strong, we wanted to really work on our passing and utilize small passes to the corner,” Purpura said. “Keira was able to execute on one of those passes.”
Cold Spring Harbor goalie Louisa Melendez made four saves. Alyssa Ciminello made six saves, and Liz Madden had five for Locust Valley.
Coming off two losses to start the season, including a tough loss to Port Washington that ended in a shootout, Purpura said earning their first win of the season shows their progress.
“We’ve been putting in a lot of hard work, and we’ve been progressing so much each game,” Purpura said. “This momentum is going to be great for us moving forward, and it feels great that all of their hard work is paying off.”
