It took all four quarters, but Garden City got it done.
Top-seeded Garden City won its 13th straight county championship with a 1-0 victory over second-seeded Manhasset in the field hockey Nassau Class B final at Adelphi on Saturday.
Casey Psaki lifted a shot from 10 yards out just past Manhasset goalkeeper Annie Spina’s left hip with just over four minutes remaining in regulation for final's lone goal.
“It felt so amazing, I didn’t even think it was real at first,” Psaki said. “When I saw the ball pop up in front of me, my only instinct was to just bury it in the back of the net.”
Garden City (15-0) plays the Suffolk Class B champion at noon on Nov. 9 at Sachem East High School in the Long Island Class B championship.
Manhasset (12-5) didn't give up after Garden City's goal though. Manhasset earned a penalty corner with three minutes remaining and called a timeout to regroup, but could not manage to capitalize on the scoring opportunity. When Garden City regained possession, it controlled the ball until the clock expired.
First-year coach Amanda Lee said she couldn’t imagine a better start to her career. Lee took over for Lauren Lavelle, who served as head coach the previous five seasons.
“I knew I had huge shoes to fill when I stepped into this role,” Lee said. “I knew it would be a challenge, but these girls are amazing and make my job so easy. They come focused and motivated every single day and it’s clear that they wanted this more than anybody.”
The first half was a physical defensive battle with neither team recording a shot on goal. Manhasset earned four penalty corners in the second quarter, but could not come up with a shot against Garden City’s stifling defense.
Garden City goalkeeper Shea McGovern didn't face a shot on goal in the first half.
“I know I have my whole team in front of me and they make my job so easy,” McGovern said. “I just have to stay composed under the pressure and I know I can trust my defense.”
Garden City also earned a penalty corner in the second quarter, but an erred swing kept the Trojans off the board as the half drew to a close.
Garden City also controlled possession the majority of the third quarter, but Manhasset’s defensive unit protected its circle. Psaki recorded the first shot of the game with 2:49 remaining in the third, but the ball veered just wide of the cage.
Manhasset began the final quarter with some momentum, earning three consecutive penalty corners which generated two shots from Eden Randall. Lauren Kim fired off another shot, but McGovern and the Trojans’ defense kept Manhasset off the board.
When Garden City transitioned the ball back upfield, Psaki decided to give it another shot. And this time, it worked. And delivered Garden City another championship.
