Bayport-Blue Point and Seaford had three tough acts to follow.
The previous three games in the Long Island Championships all went down to the wire and delivered some unforgettable performances.
Then the last game of the football season produced a moment that Bayport-Blue Point kicker Tommy Steyert will remember forever.

With his team trailing by two points and one second left on the clock, Steyert trotted onto the field for a 47-yard field-goal attempt with the Long Island Class IV title on the line.
“It was nothing I haven’t kicked before in practice,” he said. “I just went out there and did exactly what I do for a PAT.”
Before he knew it, he was engulfed by a sea of Phantoms on the other side of the field.
Steyert’s kick split the uprights with plenty of room to spare, giving Bayport-Blue Point a 20-19 win over Seaford on Saturday night at Stony Brook University.
It’s the longest field goal ever made in a Long Island championship game. The previous record was held by West Islip’s Scott Coppo, who kicked a 43-yarder in 1993.

“It was probably the best one I kicked all season,” Steyert said. “When it went in, I’ve never felt anything like that before.”
After two straight incompletions from Seaford’s 38-yard line left five seconds on the clock, Colin Clark hit Colin Most for an 8-yard gain on the Phantoms’ sideline. Most immediately went down, and Bayport-Blue Point spent its last timeout with one second left.
“That wasn’t even a play that we have in our playbook,” coach Mike Zafonte said. “We put Most on that side and said, ‘Do a stop route at the first-down marker.’ That was ad-lib stuff. We never do that. I don’t run a play unless we run it 5,000 times in practice during the week.”
Said Clark, “I trust Most to make the catch and get down and I trust my coaches to call the timeout. We bring on Tommy Steyert and he hits a field goal that this program will never forget.”
The kick gave the Phantoms (10-2) their third Long Island title in the last four years.
“Congratulations to them. That was an awesome game,” Seaford coach Mike McHugh said. “That was an awesome kick. [Steyert] is the MVP of this game.”
Michael Calvacca ran for a 13-yard touchdown to give Seaford a 19-17 lead with 2:40 left, but Ryan Space blocked the PAT kick, allowing Steyert’s kick to decide the outcome of the game.

“I made an outside move and I just split the end and the guy next to him and put my hands up and I realized it was blocked,” Space said. “It’s surreal that we just won the game like that.”
Steyert kicked a 26-yard field goal to give the Phantoms a 10-7 lead with 11:13 left in the fourth quarter.
Seaford answered quickly, with Brian Falk taking three straight tosses to the right for gains of 8, 14 and 11 yards. Bayport-Blue Point took a timeout to make an adjustment, but the Phantoms still had no answer for Falk. The senior took a fourth straight toss to the right 31 yards for a touchdown to give Seaford a 13-10 lead with 10:08 remaining.
“We knew it was coming, but we were missing tackles and diving on the ground,” Zafonte said. “Falk is a great player and their linemen are tough. They get off the ball fast and they’re quick.”
Bayport-Blue Point followed with an 11-play, 63-yard drive that ended with Clark powering over the goal line for a 9-yard TD run and a 17-13 lead with 3:45 left.

Falk, who broke a 42-yard run to set up Calvacca’s score, ended his spectacular high school career by rushing for 190 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and catching three passes for 54 yards.
Brian Hennessy caught a 16-yard TD pass from Michael Spinella in the second quarter for Seaford (10-2).
Clark ran for 99 yards and a touchdown and threw for 118 yards, including a 15-yard TD pass to Most with three seconds left in the first half to tie the score at 7. Most caught six passes for 85 yards.

But Steyert reminded everyone at LaValle Stadium that kickers are football players, too.
“He’s a weapon,” Zafonte said. “We practice that with three seconds left, kicking the game-winning field goal. They don’t always go in in practice, but that one did.”
