High school roundup: Softball, baseball and boys lacrosse

Sophia Nicastro struck out 13 and allowed three hits in a complete game and went 3-for-4 with an RBI double to lead No. 1 Calhoun to a 6-3 win over No. 5 Bethpage in Game 2 of a Nassau Class AA softball semifinal series on Thursday. Katie DiPaola had an RBI single and Megan Hobdy added an RBI. Madison Martins added a double. Gabby Keener hit a three-run double for Bethpage (15-8). Calhoun (12-12) will host Game 3 at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Oceanside 9, Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK 2: Karley Handleman went 2-for-2 with a home run and McKaela Genna added two hits and two RBIs to lead No. 1 Oceanside over No. 4 Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK in Game 2 of a Nassau Class AAA semifinal series. Oceanside (21-3) will face the winner of No. 2 Massapequa/No. 3 Syosset in the first of a three-game final series at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 31 at Farmingdale State. Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK finished 18-4.
MacArthur 11, Mepham 2: Back-to-back two-run singles by Isabella Santoro and Anabelle Maria highlighted a nine-run second inning for No. 3 MacArthur in its win over No. 2 Mepham in Game 2 of a Nassau Class AA semifinal series. Olivia Macken struck out five and allowed four hits. MacArthur (11-12) will visit Mepham (10-10) in Game 3 at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Sachem East 5, Riverhead 4: Madison Fisher caught a line drive at third base and fired to Gianna Prisco at first to double up a runner for the final out of No. 5 Sachem East’s win over No. 4 Riverhead in the second round of the Suffolk Class AAA double elimination playoffs. Xiomara Llerena went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Prisco went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Emily Beebe went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Sachem East (15-4) will visit No. 1 Sachem North in the third round at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Riverhead (16-5) will host No. 7 Comsewogue/Port Jefferson in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Sachem North 5, Northport 1: Marissa Mazzone went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored to lead No. 1 Sachem North over No. 8 Northport in the second round of the Suffolk Class AAA double elimination playoffs. Brooke Giordano had an RBI and two runs scored for Sachem North (19-2). Northport (15-7) will host No. 11 Half Hollow Hills in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Commack 14, Longwood 4: Madison Johnston went 4-for-5 with four doubles and three RBIs and recorded her 100th career hit in No. 2 Commack’s win over No. 10 Longwood in the second round of the Suffolk Class AAA double elimination playoffs. Kate Schweitzer struck out 10 and allowed one earned run in a complete game. She broke Commack’s single-season strikeout record, set by Kayla O’Boyle (253) in 2023 with 254 strikeouts. Commack (18-3) will host No. 6 Ward Melville in the third round at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Longwood (12-10) will play an elimination game at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
BASEBALL
Commack 2, Longwood 0: Luke Krzemienski struck out five in five scoreless innings of relief to lead No. 4 Commack over No. 1 Longwood in the second round of the Suffolk Class AAA double elimination playoffs. Robbie Mascia hit a solo home run and Mike Intzirillis hit an RBI double. Commack (14-8) will visit No. 2 Connetquot in the third round at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Longwood (20-2) will host No. 7 Patchogue-Medford in an elimination game at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
East Islip 6, Hauppauge 1: Jaden Espinal struck out five and allowed one run and five hits in six innings to lead No. 5 East Islip over No. 4 Hauppauge in the second round of the Suffolk Class AA double elimination playoffs. Nick Azzizzo went 3-for-4 with a two-run double and Michael Tramaglini went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Chris Rizzo went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. East Islip (14-6) will visit No. 1 Eastport-South Manor in the third round at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Hauppauge 5, West Babylon 1: Kevin Hoeler struck out eight and allowed two hits in a complete game to lead No. 4 Hauppauge over No. 8 West Babylon in a Suffolk Class AA elimination game. Tucker Brown, Matthew Oliveto, and Kyle Magill each had two hits. Hauppauge (14-8) will host No. 9 Northport in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. West Babylon finished 13-8.
St. Dominic 6, St. Anthony’s 3: Chris Vangelatos, Ray Kim and Louis Gounaris each hit a home run to lead No. 5 St. Dominic over No. 1 St. Anthony’s in the NSCHSAA elimination bracket final. Tyler Camastro struck out four in four innings of relief to earn the win. St. Dominic (19-13) will face No. 2 Kellenberg in the first of a three-game final series at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Hofstra. Dean Roche went 2-for-3 with an RBI for St. Anthony’s (16-10).
BOYS LACROSSE
Roslyn 9, Long Beach 8: Josh Berger scored four goals in No. 5 Roslyn’s win over No. 4 Long Beach in the Nassau Class B quarterfinals. Luke Rice added three goals. Roslyn (13-4) will face No. 1 Garden City in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Hofstra. Aiden DeRupo made 14 saves for Long Beach (6-10).
