For the third time in a week, the girls tennis Long Island small school championship has been postponed.

The match between Cold Spring Harbor and Bayport-Blue Point was originally scheduled for Oct. 30 and was rescheduled twice due to inclement weather. The teams finally began play at 2 p.m. Monday at Syosset High School. Less than an hour into the match, light rain forced a 30-minute delay. Ultimately, officials called the match and the two teams will try again at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Cold Spring Harbor coach Melissa McLees said the uncertainty of the postponements has been aggravating, but that she and her coaching staff work hard to keep the athletes focused.

“We’ve practiced with the boys team, we’ve practiced with Syosset, we do whatever we can to keep our practices match-level,” McLees said. “That way when a situation like this comes up, the girls are ready for it.”

Bayport-Blue Point's Jordana Heller and Julie Willems took the first set over Cold Spring Harbor's Kate Rogers and Hadley Arcati, 6-1, on Monday before the postponement. The rest of the matches were still in the middle of the first set.

The Phantoms (18-2) are searching for their second straight Long Island title over Cold Spring Harbor (11-5).

“They need to rely on what got them here,” Bayport-Blue Point coach John Selvaggio said. “The mental strength, the training, all the experiences they’ve had in the past few weeks have prepared them for this.”
