Value City Furniture, American Signature closing all stores — here's what it means for New Yorkers
American Signature and Value City Furniture are holding liquidation sales as the retailer winds down.
Furniture retailer American Signature Inc. is closing all 89 of its remaining stores nationwide following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in November, the company announced Friday.
The Columbus, Ohio-based furniture retailer, which was founded nearly 80 years ago and also owns Value City Furniture, has begun a “going out of business” sale at 79 Value City stores across 13 states, the company said. Ten American Signature stores, in Delaware and Florida, have also begun liquidation sales, with discounts of up to 50%, according to a company statement.
The brand has two Value City locations upstate, in Greece and Henrietta, according to the company’s website. The closest store to Long Island is the American Signature in Bayonne, New Jersey.
In December, Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday warned customers they should use gift cards for American Signature Furniture and Value City Furniture early that month in light of the bankruptcy, according to a release from his office.
As of Monday, the retailer was no longer accepting gift cards, returns or exchanges at its stores, according to the American Signature Furniture website. The company directed customers who have paid deposits for orders they've already placed to file a claim with Verita Global, a legal fiduciary services company handling creditor claims in the bankruptcy.
