Mariah Carey is coming home to Long Island for the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 7. The singer, who was born in Huntington and raised there as well as in Melville, Northport and Greenlawn, will attend the ceremony at UBS Arena in Elmont, where she'll receive the Video Vanguard Award.
In addition to being honored, Carey is set to perform a medley of her hits at the awards show, which will air on CBS at 8 p.m. The program, to be hosted by Bay Shore native LL Cool J, will also be simulcast on MTV and stream on Paramount+.
The last time Carey, 56, appeared at the VMAs was in 2005, when she performed several of her songs including "We Belong Together" from her album "The Emancipation of Mimi." She made her first appearance at the VMAs in 1991 when she sang her smash "Emotions." In 1998, she and Whitney Houston opened the show and shared a playful moment by "accidentally" showing up in the same custom brown dress designed by Vera Wang.
Carey joins an elite group of past Video Vanguard Award recipients including Beyoncé, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, David Bowie and LL Cool J.
The pop diva isn't the only Long Islander who'll be recognized at the VMAs. Uniondale-raised rapper Busta Rhymes will also receive the inaugural Rock the Bells Visionary Award.
