Wednesday marked "Hamilton's" 10th anniversary on Broadway, and now the celebration will continue on the big screen. Walt Disney Studios announced that the filmed performance of the Tony-winning musical starring the show's creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the rest of the Broadway cast will officially arrive in movie theaters on Sept. 5.
The movie, which was shot at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016, premiered on Disney+ in the summer of 2020 and is still available on the streaming service. A bonus for moviegoers will be “Reuniting the Revolution,” a prologue featuring new interviews with the original cast and creators about the show and the impact it has had on their lives.
Long Island theaters screening "Hamilton" will include Showcase Cinema de lux Farmingdale, AMC Dine-in Levittown 10, AMC Dine-in Huntington Square 12, Regal Westbury IMAX and RPX, AMC Roosevelt Field 8 in Garden City, AMC Loews Stony Brook 17, Regal Deer Park, Regal Ronkonkoma and Island 16 Cinema de Lux in Holtsville. Tickets are available at fandango.com/hamilton.
“When we filmed ‘Hamilton,’ we wanted to try to capture the feeling of being in the Richard Rodgers Theatre during that first year on Broadway,” director-producer Thomas Kail says, “and we’re thrilled that audiences will now have the opportunity to experience it on the big screen.”
Miranda unofficially announced the theatrical "Hamilton" release on Tuesday's "Tonight Show." He told host Jimmy Fallon that producers always intended to bring the show to movie theaters, but when the pandemic hit plans were shifted to streaming instead. He and Fallon then performed a "Hamilton" medley.
CORRECTION: Walt Disney Studios' filmed 2016 performance of "Hamilton" will officially open in movie theaters nationwide Sept. 5 in celebration of the Broadway musical's 10th anniversary. Due to an editing error, a story Thursday misstated the timeline of the cinematic run.
