When customers walk into Sayville's Salty Isla, they are greeted by a glistening variety of accessories, including handmade and permanent jewelry.
"I opened up my store, Salty Isla, as a means to sell my handmade jewelry and to offer permanent jewelry in Sayville and neighboring towns," says Eva Arnemann, a teacher in the Central Islip School District.
The store, which opened in July, is a side hustle, notes Arnemann. "It allows me to be creative, which is such a part of me."
Permanent jewelry — which is when a custom piece of jewelry is fitted and welded while someone is wearing it — allows customers to wear pieces on a regular basis, long-term. This trend is booming, adds Arnemann.
"Customers love it because it is easy and looks beautiful. I have over 20 different types of chains in a variety of metals," she says. "Whether it is sterling silver, gold-filled, rose gold or 14 karat, I have it all."
The store features a charm bar with an array of adornments, including initials, birthstones and more. There are also party options for those looking to have the charm bar experience brought to them.
Arnemann says friends and relatives often come in together to get matching permanent jewelry.
"It’s very sweet when I have three generations getting bracelets that match. It’s a special moment when they walk out of my store with matching bracelets," she says.
Some shoppers have become repeat customers, who now have two or three permanent bracelets. As Arnemann points out, the stacked look is in. One customer has a total of 11 bracelets. "She keeps coming back for more," she says.

Another popular item is Salty Isla’s beach-inspired hoodies, which come in several colors and sell for $79.
The name Salty Isla has personal ties to Arnemann and her family, who are originally from Spain. "Both of my parents were born there, and we visit and go often, so it just seemed perfect to add a Spanish word into my store name," she explains. Isla means "island" in Spanish.
"Since we live on an island, I thought it had a fun twist and seemed catchy. My jewelry has a beachy vibe, so the name seemed very fitting."
Prices range from $50 to $75 for silver bracelets, $65 to $90 for gold bracelets and starting at $160 for 14K gold bracelets.
