Darlene Heller, of Holbrook, arrested for running over motorist during carjacking at East Setauket Walmart, police say

A Holbrook woman assaulted and intentionally ran over an elderly motorist during a carjacking in an East Setauket parking lot Thursday afternoon, Suffolk County police said.

Dareine Heller, 34, was shortly arrested after crashing the vehicle, police said.

The 84-year-old woman was attempting to park her 2013 Subaru Forrester in a spot in front of a Walmart store on Nesconset Highway when she exited her vehicle to move a shopping cart, authorities said.

As the woman stepped out of the vehicle, Heller entered the driver’s seat and attempted to drive away, police said.

The victim then approached the vehicle and a struggle ensued, with Heller shoving the woman to the ground and running her over, dragging her a short distance, officials said.

Heller then struck a pole, a stop sign, another vehicle and a brick retaining wall before fleeing the scene.

She drove to Pond Path in Centereach, where she was arrested around 1 p.m. The vehicle was impounded.

The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries, authorities said.

Heller was charged with second-degree robbery causing physical injuries, second-degree robbery, second-degree assault injuring a victim 65 or older, second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident causing injuries and two counts of seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance.

Heller is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
