Suffolk police detectives arrested and charged a Lake Ronkonkoma woman on Wednesday who they allege struck a teenaged electric bicycle rider with her car and and fled the scene.
Around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, the e-bike rider, 13, of Ronkonkoma, was heading north on Hawkins Avenue when a southbound 2012 white Ford Fusion turned left onto School Street, struck him, and continued heading east, police said.
The teen was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of injuries considered serious but not life-threatening, police said.
Detectives with the Suffolk County Police Department's Fourth Squad based in Smithtown identified Virginia Waka as the driver of the Ford, according to a news release. On Wednesday, police arrested and charged Waka, 47, with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury.
Waka received a Desk Appearance Ticket and is expected to appear at First District Court in Central Islip at a future date, police said.
