NYS Attorney General's Office releases body-worn video of fatal shooting of Emilson Joan Ordoñez-Banegas by Suffolk police in Centereach in July

The suspect in a Centereach knife attack this summer returned to the scene, two newly released police body-camera videos appear to show, and tried to stab his victim again before Suffolk County police shot him dead.

The recordings, released Wednesday by the New York State Attorney General’s Office, show paramedics administering bandages to the unidentified 44-year-old victim when Emilson Joan Ordoñez-Banegas, 29, emerges from a wooded area with something in his hand and winds up to attack the injured man again, authorities said.

Paramedics clear away from the men as one officer is seen on video firing on Ordoñez-Banegas before he’s able to make contact with the victim again.

He then collapses on the ground.

The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation, which is mandated to look into all fatal shootings at the hands of police, said the release of the video is not an "expression of any opinion as to the guilt or innocence of any party in a criminal matter or any opinion as to how or whether any individual may be charged with a crime."

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Suffolk County police said they responded to a 911 call for a "disturbance with a weapon" around 8:30 a.m. on July 13 and found the injured victim with stab wounds to the neck and hand in the wooded area in what appears to be an encampment behind a small strip mall on Middle Country Road. Several bicycles, a hammock and chairs appear strewed around the dirt area seen in the recordings.

As paramedics start to bandage the man, police said, Ordoñez-Banegas, a homeless man, walked up to the victim with a 10- to 12-inch knife and let out a scream before pulling his right arm back to take another swing.

At least three shots could be heard on the videos released by the  attorney general's office.

Both men were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where Ordoñez-Banegas died of his gunshot wounds.

The victim of the attack recovered.

The Suffolk County officers were treated for tinnitus. They have not been charged.

"Had it not been for the officer's quick actions, the victim would have been stabbed with that knife and probably killed," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said soon after the shooting.
