A Saturday morning fire at Shoreham-Wading River High School affected the main gym's ceiling, according to a spokesperson for the high school. The gym floor also suffered water damage.
The extent of the damage is still being assessed, the spokesperson said.
The fire damage is not expected to delay the beginning of the school year, which is scheduled for the week after Labor Day, the spokesperson said.
The fire was called in shortly after 8 a.m. according to a spokesman from the Suffolk County Fire Marshal's Office. The Wading River Fire Department, along with first responders from nine other departments, responded to the scene and were able to put out the fire by 10:30, the spokesman said.
The Suffolk County spokesman could not say whether anyone was injured, what caused the fire or how extensive the building was damaged. He could only say the fire was in the ceiling of the building.
Officials from the Wading River Fire Department could not be immediately reached for comment on Saturday.
