A motorcyclist was injured in a crash that closed all westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway in Islandia for around five hours on Monday, Suffolk police said.
Around 11:29 a.m. the motorcycle operator tried to "cross in front of" a 2025 Dodge pickup truck in the westbound HOV lane of the highway near Old Nichols Road, Suffolk police said in a news release. The two vehicles collided, and the motorcyclist was "ejected" from his vehicle, the release reads.
An ambulance transported the motorcycle operator to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was treated for "serious physical injuries," police said. The pickup truck driver was not harmed.
The crash shuttered all westbound lanes of the LIE until around 4:45 p.m., at which time a Suffolk County Police Department spokesperson said only the westbound HOV lane remained closed. Police reopened the HOV lane later Monday evening.
Police impounded the truck and the motorcycle for safety checks, according to the release. Fourth Squad detectives are investigating the crash. The department asks anyone with information regarding the crash to call investigators at 631-854-8452.
