After golf fans endured dreary — and at times rainy — weather on Ryder Cup practice round day Thursday at Bethpage State Park, spectators on Friday for the first round of the tournament should get to enjoy blue skies and summerlike temperatures.
Showers and thunderstorms are predicted for overnight, with a 20% chance of showers Friday morning. But then, the National Weather Service predicts Friday will be mostly sunny with a high near 81 degrees. The average high temperature on Long Island for the date is 71 degrees.
While the Bethpage Black course is famous for its difficulty, on Friday the world's best golfers shouldn't have any significant challenges from the wind. Only a light breeze of about 6 mph out of the west is expected.
The weather service said Friday night will be partly cloudy with a low temperature dropping down to about 72 degrees.
The second day of play on Saturday should be under partly sunny skies with a high temperature of around 78 degrees.
Sunday, the last day of the Ryder Cup tournament, players — and spectators — might want to prepare for rain again. The weather service said there is a 30% chance of precipitation before 2 p.m. Temperatures should peak at about 75 degrees.
