Skip the crowds, long lines and chaos of New York City airports because Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma is in the running for USA Today’s list of the nation’s best small airports.

The nomination highlights airports that serve fewer than 10 million passengers annually but excel in convenience, amenities and overall traveler experience.

Islip Town-run MacArthur, which has made the national top 10 three times in the past five years, is again being recognized as a calm, efficient alternative to Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports.

"The fact that MacArthur is being recognized is a testament to how incredible this airport is," said Islip Town Aviation Commissioner Rob Schneider. "We provide a superior customer experience, from easy access and smooth security to getting to your gate on time, making travel stress-free, often the opposite of what you often find at larger airports."

Voting is open online through Sept. 23, with winners announced Oct. 15. Readers can vote once per day until the polls close.

Located about 50 miles from midtown Manhattan, MacArthur offers quick access to a variety of popular domestic and international destinations. Avelo Airlines and Cape Air are the airport's newest air carriers in 2025, offering destinations in North Carolina, Florida and Massachusetts.

"MacArthur is a great addition to the Avelo network and provides a convenient way to get to Long Island and the New York area," said Courtney Goff, a spokesperson for Avelo Airlines, in a statement. "ISP is what Avelo looks for in new airports and destinations: easy to use, less stress and a great travel experience."

The airport is also served by Breeze Airways, Frontier, JetBlue and Southwest. Recent improvements include a modern Ground Transportation Center and upgrades to the baggage claim area.

Schneider added: "If you're flying out of MacArthur, your vacation starts the minute you get here, not to your destination."
